Event Details
What is B4P (Battle for the Paddle)?
Battle for the Paddle was introduced in 2009-2010 as an all-school class competition. The event is designed to enable students to come together and build class community while preparing for an evening rally-type event. The night of (B4P) is an amazing culmination of months of planning on the part of students and staff. Students participate in decorating their section of the Watsonville High School new gym, performing their choreographed dance and competing in rally games. Staff members serve as greeters, referees, judges, DJs, and scorekeepers. Parents and guests attend as spectators and fans. Class officers, members of Animas, and the Director of Activities help coordinate the event, including set up, clean up, and announcing.
Class Moderators
Members of the staff assist each class in their preparation. Moderators are responsible for being present at all meetings held on campus, including those that occur outside of school hours. Moderators serve as liaisons between students and the Director of Activities, helping to keep students on track and informed of important due dates and requirements.

Student Participation
All students are encouraged and expected to participate. This is a school-wide event and it requires everyone’s involvement to make it special. Parents and Moderators are charged with encouraging students to find an area of strength and interest to get involved with.
Students wishing to compete in rally games must participate in the dance. This assists in keeping numbers up for the dance, since it is a challenge sometimes to get students to commit to the dance.
Parent Participation
All parents are encouraged to dress in their student’s class colors, bring noise makers and cheer for their student’s class. Spirit points are awarded to the classes for participation in the form of dress and positive cheering. Points may be deducted for any negative cheering.
Decorations
On the day of the event, students will have two hours to decorate their section of the Watsonville High School gym. Classes may also decorate the section where their fans will sit, and this section may also be judged. Decorations will be judged based on the following criteria: creativity, relation to theme, overall artistic quality. The Director of Activities will designate each class’s assigned space in the gym.
Students may use ladders with adult supervision. Moderators must be present to assist. Student Activities will supply paint, paper, and tape to each class.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where and when will the Battle for the Paddle be held?
Due to the popularity and growth of Battle for the Paddle and the need for a larger venue, the event has been moved to the old Gym at Watsonville High School. The event is Wednesday, April 5th, 2023.
What time will the event begin?
Doors will open at 6:00 pm for handicap seating, 6:10 pm for general admission. The event begins at 6:30. No tickets will be sold at the door.
When can I purchase B4P tickets?
Tickets will be sold in the main office beginning Monday, March 13th for $20 each. For the first week (March 6-10) each student has two tickets reserved and only that student can purchase his or her tickets. Many of you took advantage of the opportunity offered during the registration period to pre-purchase your tickets by having the charges added to your FACTS tuition account. You can verify if you did this by reviewing the charges on your FACTS account or by checking with the main office.
Beginning Monday, March 13th any unclaimed tickets will be open for sale to the general public. All tickets will be sold at the Main Office by our office support staff.
TICKET SALES CLOSE AT 3:30 PM ON APRIL 4.
NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.
Can I purchase as many B4P tickets as I want?
Yes, as long as the event does not sell out. During the second week April 3 – April 5, parents will be allowed to purchase up to 10 tickets per day, per household.
Will there be other activities occurring prior to Battle for the Paddle?
Yes, beginning at 4:00 pm, pre-B4P activities will include music and food.
Food and beverage vendors include: Carmona's BBQ, G's Tacos, Ivan's Baked Potatoes. All food sales and activities will end at 6:15 pm.
Please note the vendor will take CASH ONLY.
Will there be refreshments for purchase during Battle for the Paddle?
No. There will not be refreshments available for purchase during the event.
Where can I purchase a class T-Shirt?
Class T-Shirts can be purchased in the Main Office and can be picked up from Ms. Shannon McLeod. Proceeds from the t-shirt sales will benefit the St. Francis Campus Ministry Program.
Will there be a parking fee?
No, parking will be free of charge and available on a first come, first serve basis.
Will parking be managed by the school?
No, parking will not be managed, however, St. Francis will be providing a parking lot security guard.
Will parents be able to earn service hours for setting up for the event and cleaning up after the event?
Yes. A limited number of parents will be able to earn service hours for setup or cleanup. Please contact Mrs. Haydee Lemus if you are interested in setting up or cleaning up.
How else can parents earn service hours for Battle for the Paddle?
Parents can earn service hours for lending an 18’-20’ foot ladder.
