The St. Francis Sharks freshmen boys basketball team won a 43-40 overtime thriller over the Salinas Cowboys at Salinas High School. The Sharks started slow as they were down 11-6 at the end of the first quarter, but were sparked by a 3 point basket by Sergey DuBeau. After that the Sharks closed the gap and took a 4 point lead into the 4th quarter.
The Cowboys came back and took a late lead, but clutch free throws by Riley Scherr put the game into overtime. In overtime is when the Sharks came together and played solid team basketball. The Sharks scored 9 points in the 3 minute overtime period and had four different players chip in. The game was clinched by a pair of clutch free throws by Joseph Kovacs.
The high point man was Riley Scherr with 10 points. Braxton Rico and Richie Martinez poured in 9 points each. Post players Martinez and Scherr did an excellent job on the defensive end as they had to guard Cowboys who outsized them all night.
The Sharks freshmen team has now won two of their last three games and look to continue their strong play on December 27th at 3 PM vs. Soledad in the Watsonville Tournament at Watsonville High School. Come out and support your Sharks!
