In the first round of the Watsonville Tournament the St. Francis freshmen team fell to Watsonville 41-27. The Sharks we down 2 at halftime, but the Wildcats pulled away in the 3rd quarter. Alex Werner led the Sharks in scoring with 10 points.
The 2nd round saw the Sharks lose a heartbreaker to Soledad. The Sharks were down 17 points with 4 minutes to play, then rallied back to cut the lead to 3 with 15 seconds left. A St. Francis 3 point shot to tie the game went in and out and Soledad was able to preserve the win 48-44 after a made free throw. The comeback was led by the stellar shooting of Joseph Kovacs who had 17 points and the solid down low play by Riley Scherr with 7 points. Richie Martinez led the team in rebounding. Braxton Rico was key on the defensive end and poured in 10 points to give the Sharks a chance to win.
The final round of the tournament saw a close entertaining win for the Sharks over King City 30-24. In a very physical game the Sharks were down 11-6 at halftime. In the 2nd half the Sharks shooting came to life as they outscored King City 24-13 in the 2nd half. Joseph Kovacs led the scoring with 16 points and Alex Werner poured in 6 points. Richie Martinez was a force down low leading the team in rebounds and Nick Munoz led the team in assists from his point guard position. The freshmen team returns to action Saturday January 11th at 10 am at St. Francis High School vs. Mt. Madonna. Come out and support your Sharks.
