For the first time in school history the St. Francis Sharks have an alum in the NFL. Class of 2010 St. Francis alum Ty Sambrailo is the 59th overall selection in the 2nd round of the 2015 NFL Draft to the Denver Broncos. Sambrailo spent his college years at Colorado State so he will be in a familiar place to start his professional career. Sambrailo will be playing with future Hall of Fame Quarterback Peyton Manning and will be part of a Broncos team that is a contender for the Super Bowl next February in Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
October 11th will be a homecoming game for Sambrailo as the Broncos travel to play the Oakland Raiders in an AFC West divisional game that will kick off at 1:25 pm Pacific Time. Sambrailo will play his first preseason game at the Seattle Seahawks on August 14th at 7 pm Pacific Time.
St. Francis joins a group of Santa Cruz County Schools with an alum in the NFL. Sambrailo is the first Watsonville native drafted since Marv Marinovich in 1962 and the first Santa Cruz County draft pick since San Lorenzo Valley's Andy Levitre in 2009. Other recent Santa Cruz County natives who've played in the NFL are Trent Dilfer of Aptos, Sherman Cocroft of Watsonville, Nick Johnson of San Lorenzo Valley, Dwight Lowry of Soquel and brothers Brendon and Obafemi Ayanbadejo of Santa Cruz.
Congratulations Ty and congratulations to the Sambrailo family. Go Sharks and Go Broncos!
