St. Francis also just hosted our annual Breakfast of Champions for our Scholar/Athletes. This year we had 111 scholar/athletes, up from 91 last year. Congratulations to all our Shark scholar/athletes and thank you to all who helped put on such an amazing event!

Winter sports have come to a close with our Men’s Basketball Team going all the way to the State Finals and playing in the Golden 1 Center--the home of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. The team lost a heartbreaker 47-46 to Rolling Hills Prep. The game was televised on Comcast Sports Network, the same channel that plays all 82 Golden State Warriors games and all 162 San Francisco Giants games. Jason Gallo earned the sportsmanship medal as he led the team with 15 points on the day. The team finished the season with a 30-3 record and racked up the trophies with a SCCAL Championship, SCCAL Tournament Championship, CCS Championship and Nor Cal Championship. It was the first time any sport from St. Francis has made it to a State Final and only the 3rd time in Santa Cruz County history that a team won the Nor Cal Championship. The team was well represented on the All SCCAL Team as Sandor Rene Rodriguez was League MVP, Chase Watkins and Gallo were 1st Team All SCCAL, Ruben Ibarra was 2nd Team All SCCAL, Dominic Figueroa was Honorable Mention All SCCAL and Coach Ed Kelly was SCCAL Coach of the Year. The team was also honored by the Mayor of Watsonville on Tuesday evening for their Nor Cal Championship at City Hall.

Women’s Basketball also made the Nor Cal playoffs as they finished 2nd in the CCS. The girls lost a close game to International of San Francisco. It was the 4th time in the past 5 years our girls team has made it to Nor Cal. Janiya Sevilla was named 1st Team All SCCAL and Janessa Yniguez was Honorable Mention All SCCAL.

Three Shark basketball players named to the All Star Game played Friday night March 31st at Alvarez High School. Megan Kelly represented the Women’s team and Sandor Rene Rodriguez and Dominic Figueroa represented the Men’s team. Congratulations Sharks on a great season!
