From the Assistant Principal of Academics

Dear St. Francis Families,

Thank you for your timely submission of course selection forms for the 2017-2018 school year.  I have been busy preparing the master schedule.  I am doing my best to accommodate the course selections; unfortunately, it is not possible to have every student in his or her requested elective class and I have been meeting with students to discuss alternatives.  The final schedules for 2017-2018 will be available at the end of this month.

Name verification forms have been give to our senior students in preparation for graduation.  These forms need to be completed and returned to my office by Friday, April 7.  These forms are to verify the correct spelling of a student’s name, as families wish it to appear on the diploma.  This will also be used to announce the students during the graduation ceremony.  I will be meeting with individual students to verify correct pronunciation of names for graduation.

It is vitally important that all students focus on their studies and do their best to improve/maintain good grades for the second semester.  For seniors, this could potentially affect their status for graduation and college admission.  For all students, “D” or “F” grades in any academic classes will require remediation during the summer to ensure eligibility for graduation and/or eligibility to attend a four-year college or university.  Pajaro Valley High School is hosting the summer school in Watsonville this summer.  This is a free service available to all St. Francis students needing to remediate a grade.  The registration deadline for this summer program is April 13.

Advanced placement (AP) exams will be occurring on campus from May 1st through May 12th.  If a student has signed up to take an AP exam, please arrive to school on time and follow the instructions provided by Ms. Green.  Final exams will be occurring May 23rd through May 25th.  The final exam schedule will be posted on the St. Francis website by the end of April.

For our incoming freshmen students, the class of 2021, please note that there are placement exams on Saturday, April 8th.  These exams are required only if a student is requesting an advanced level class during his or her freshman year.  Those advanced level classes include Biology Honors, Geometry Honors, Spanish 2, and Spanish 2 Honors.

  • The Geometry/Honors Geometry placement test will be held at 9:00am.  The time allowed for the test is 50 minutes and students will need a pencil and a scientific or graphing calculator.
  • The Spanish 2/Honors Spanish 2 placement test will be held at 10:30am.  The time allowed for this test is 50 minutes and will include an oral interview with the Spanish department.  Students will only need something to write with for this test.
  • The Honors Biology placement test will be held at 12:00pm (noon).  The time allowed for this test is also 50 minutes and students will only need a pencil for this test.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Easter! I am also hopeful that our students will have a restful break and will return fully prepared for the challenging work that lies ahead to the conclusion of the second semester.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at [email protected] or by phone at (831) 724-5933 ext. 203.

Sincerely,
David M. Cmaylo
Assistant Principal of Academics
