Happy Month of May. May is a month rich in Salesian significance. May 1, we celebrated the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This is a day that we honor the Salesian Brothers. Don Bosco’s vision was successful because of the many laymen who worked alongside the priest to carry out the mission. On May 6, we celebrate St. Dominic Savio. The young boy who at age 12 dedicated his life to the service and salvation of his friends, all the boys who were a part of Don Bosco’s family. On May 13, we celebrate St. Mary Mazzarello. She is the co-foundress of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. She strived to serve the girls in the same examples that Bosco was serving the boys. On May 24, we honor Mary Help of Christians. Don Bosco saw the Virgin Mary as a mother to us all in the order of grace and protection. Bosco regularly prayed to the Virgin Mary to intercede on his behalf and to provide protection to all the boys in the oratory. With many example of Mary’s protection, Pope Pius V in 1572 granted the Virgin with the title of Mary Help of Christians.
